THE TAYLOR STEVENS SHOW PODCAST EPISODES 1 THROUGH 9:
EPISODE 1: In which we find our footing for the show and discuss why Japan became the setting for THE MASK and how the research for the various locations used within the books came to be.
EPISODE 2: Is it really unbelievable to speak 22 languages? Vanessa Michael Munroe's ability to pick up languages is the trait that's defined her life, taking her down the paths that have made her what she is. Here we discuss how possible or impossible her "poisonous gift" might be in real life, what it means to be a hyper polyglot, and how Munroe's particular talent can't help her in THE MASK.
EPISODE 3: Can a beautiful woman realistically pass as a man? One of Vanessa Michael Munroe’s signature traits is her ability to convincingly swap between male and female personas. In this episode we discuss how Munroe decides which gender fits her role and how she pulls it off, and highlight examples of women who’ve done the same in real life including a model who boosted her career by modeling as a man.
EPISODE 4: Why does a location feel more authentic to one reader than another? Herein we discuss some unique aspects of Japanese culture featured within THE MASK including hostess clubs and the role they play in the business culture of Japan, what “authenticity” means, and how the story of THE MASK could have only been set in Japan.
EPISODE 5: When it comes to fiction, how much of the art is life? Here we discuss the many traits Taylor Stevens may or may not share with a quasi-psychotic, knife-wielding, butt-kicking, anti-hero, as well as several real-life experiences that have worked their way into the Vanessa Michael Munroe stories.
EPISODE 6: The truth about book tours: In this episode we go behind the scenes for a look at book tours and the role they play in today’s world of publishing. We also address the question so many readers want answered: “When are you coming to my town?” and have fun discussing ways that we, as readers, can support our favorite authors.
EPISODE 7: Hillary Huber (the voice of Munroe) and I have worked together to produce 5 1/2 audio books in the Vanessa Michael Munroe series, but we've never spoken--until now. We come together to chat for the very first time on launch day for THE MASK in this entertaining episode of what I continue to insist on calling The Unnamed Podcast.
EPISODE 8: In this first Q & A episode, we respond to reader questions, including: How do you get past perfectionism? Can you discuss character versus plot development? How can authors figure out their writing style? Did you take any writing classes and if so how much do you think they helped or hindered you? What is the expected length of the Munroe series?
EPISODE 9: Here we discuss the reasons why the heroes and heroines that drive popular thrillers often carry a lot of baggage. Why the alcoholic ex-cop, for example, or the man who was just fired from his job, or the woman with the traumatic past? Can a normal, well-adjusted character propel a thriller series? This is my explanation as to why I think that’s a difficult—if not impossible—feat to pull off with any sense of realism.
